Reports by the Ho Chi Minh city Institute for Development Studies show that the city has 10 industrial zones and 3 export processing zones with 300,000-500,000 workers. Over 70% of the workers come from other provinces and cities. A majority of them are young, have average or low income, and lack conditions to meet their recreation demand.

As workers’ recreation activities are mainly through mass media like watching television, listening to radio and other types of recreation using the Internet, the city Department of Information and Communications is working with the Vinatech Company to install nearly 1,000 free wireless hotspots in dormitories and hostels which mainly accommodate workers working in industrial and export processing zones in the city.

The installation will be divided into 2 phases. The first, which was carried out in the first half of this year, will provide wireless network serving 10,000 workers in district 7 and Thu Duc district, while the second phase, which is planned from December 18th to June 2019, is expected to serve some 100,000 additional workers.

Le Quoc Cuong, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh city Department of Information and Communications, said that the provision of free wireless network for workers in their hostels is significant and necessary to increase their spiritual lives./.
