The Prime Minister has adopted the national program on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by restricting loss and degradation of forests, preserving and upgrading carbon reserves and sustainably managing forest resources (Program on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation – REDD++) until 2030.

The program aims to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through REDD++ activities, and increase forest coverage to 42% and the forest area to 14.4 million hectares by 2020.

In the 2021 – 2030 period, the nation targets to stabilize the forest area at least equal to the area reached by 2020, increase forest coverage to 45%, contributing to realizing the national goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 8% from business-as-usual (BAU) levels, as committed at the Paris agreement on climate change. The contribution can be increased to 25% if receiving international aid.

The program will be carried out from 2017 to 2030, with priority given to areas often reporting forest loss and degradation, as well as areas suffering from climate change impacts and those with forest carbon reserves./.
