Nearly VND7 billion for earthquake research in Thua Thien - Hue province

The Ministry of Science and Technology has adopted a national research program on assessing the danger of earthquakes, serving the planning for regional development and ensuring the safety for hydro-electric and irrigation constructions, as well as cultural relics in the central province of Thua Thien - Hue.

To be carried out from now until late 2019 with a capital of nearly VND7 billion by the Institute of Geophysics, the research aims to identify what kind of earthquakes happening in the province, whether it is induced earthquake or not, and how it may influences cultural relics and heritages, thus proposing solutions for the prevention and mitigation of the earthquake damage.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Nam, Director of the Thua Thien - Hue provincial Department of Science and Technology, said that the implementation of the research was proposed after there is was a dense surprising number of earthquakes in A Luoi district since the A Luoi hydro-electric reservoir was put into operation.

According to the Institute of Geophysics, since July 2014, A Luoi district reported 16 earthquakes ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 on the Richter magnitude scale./.
