Representatives from the Ministry of National Defence on August 9th, the Air Defence – Air Force and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a deal to hand over 12.7 hectares of land which was treated to be free from dioxin at the Da Nang International Airport to the Ministry of Transport.

This was the second land hand-over serving the expansion of the Da Nang International Airport, as USAID and the Ministry of National Defence are continuing to cooperate to treat land and mud polluted by dioxin in areas that were used by the US air force.

Senior Lieutenant-General Pham Ngoc Minh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said the transfer of land marked the efforts of the Vietnamese Government, directly the Ministry of National Defence, and USAID in successfully carrying out the project on treating the environment polluted by dioxin, which was funded by non-refundable official development assistance (ODA) from the US.

Earlier, in May, after the completion of the first phase of the project on treating dioxin polluted environment at Da Nang International Airport, the Ministry of National Defence handed over 5.97 hectares of land to build taxiway E7 and an expanded parking area to promptly serve the upcoming APEC Summit, which is scheduled in November.

As planned, after the project on treating dioxin polluted environment ends in the first quarter of 2018, the Ministry of National Defence will continue to hand over the remaining 16 hectares so that the Ministry of Transport can expand the Da Nang International Airport in line with Government planning.

According to Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho, the handing over of 12.7 hectares of land for the expansion of the Da Nang International Airport will have a positive influence on socio-economic development in Central and Central Highlands localities, firstly by serving the APEC Summit./.
