According to Nguyen Xuan Duc, Head of the Department of Locality II, regions’ localities are working with relevant departments and sectors to approve a list of projects to be funded, while conducting the construction of hundreds of infrastructure projects related to transport, electricity, irrigation, and schools in disadvantaged areas.

Poor households in the regions have also been provided with free seeds, animal breed and agricultural materials; assisted with production development models; and trained in agricultural and forestry courses, which help them invest in production, thus increasing income and escaping poverty.

Mr. Duc added that poverty reduction among ethnic minority and mountainous people had made progress, lowering the poverty rate in the regions to some 14.4%.

Launched since 1998, Program 135 aims to improve living conditions for ethnic minority people living in mountainous, extremely disadvantaged communes. In the 2017-2020 period, it is coming to 2,139 extremely disadvantaged and border communes in 46 provinces nationwide./.
