There will be four more schools including Nguyen Minh Quang Primary School, Thanh Da Secondary School, Nguyen Huu Huan and Duong Van Thi High Schools participating in planting trees and raising students’ awareness about trees in schools until the end of July.

This is an activity under the project One Million Trees in Cities that aims to improve city ecosystems.

Before planting trees, Gaia had worked carefully with the schools to survey the soil and current system of trees in the school in order to advise the school on appropriate trees to be planted. The chosen trees include those that provide shade or/and scenic value, such as Ta-khian, Khaya wood, Copperpod, Pink Poui, Giant Crepe-myrtle and Flamboyant. The seedlings have a height of 3 -5 m, stem diameter of 4 - 8cm, and with a complete root system to ensure survival and firm rooting as the tree grows.

In addition, students and teacherss are also instructed to learn about the planted tree, and its values. The schools also learn how to take care of the trees over the next two years. The students were so excited because this is a rare opportunity for them to plant trees at their beloved school. Through practical activities, the students are strongly connected to the trees and to nature. After the tree planting, Gaia instructs the students and teachers carefully on how to take care and monitor the trees for the next two years.

Educational activities including quiz shows and contests to raise students' awareness about trees were also conducted before or after the planting ceremonies to improve students’ and teachers’ understanding of the values of trees, especially trees in school campuses.

“Activity aims at increasing green area for schools and educating the students on the importance of trees. We are doing our best to seek support and donations from businesses, organizations and individuals in order to create more green areas and a generation who highly appreciate trees and nature and are ready to act for a green future,” said Ms. Do Thi Thanh Huyen, Founder and Executive Director of Gaia Nature Conservation Center.

In addition to the tree plantation and education activities in schools, Gaia also plans for many other practical activities, which not only increases green spaces but also connects the students with trees and with the nature. Gaia calls for the cooperation of business, organizations and individuals to join hands with them to create a more sustainable city and a green generation./.
