Program assists child cancer patients

The 10th Sunflower Festival was held in Ho Chi Minh city on November 26th by the Vietnam Youth Confederation in the city and Tuoi tre (Youth) Newspaper to support child cancer patients.

The year 2017 marks the 10th year since the death of a young Le Thanh Thuy, citizen, a cancer patient in Ho Chi Minh city - Le Thanh Thuy who started the program “Thuy’s dreams”. Since then, her dreams have continued to be written by many people.

Blood donation and exhibition of paintings by 400 child cancer patients to raise funds and help realise their dreams were among practical activities under of the festival.

According to Nguyen Thi Huong, a representative of the organising committee, over the past 10 years, the program has helped child cancer patients by supporting medical treatment fees, building playing grounds, organising birthday parties, and developing classrooms right in hospitals for the patients. Notably, a classroom at the Ho Chi Minh city Cancer Hospital has taught over 600 child patients over the past eight years.

“The Sunflower Festival has received great material and spiritual support from agencies, unions and sponsors,” she said. 

During the festival, the organisers presented scholarships to 85 children.

Earlier, a walk “For child cancer patients” was organized in the city to support the festival, attracting a large number of participants./.
