Provinces and cities respond to World AIDS Day

CPV: On the occasion of World AIDS Day (December 1st), provinces and cities organized various activities to visit people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS and to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS to people.

On November 28, the Ho Chi Minh Health Department organized 3 delegations to visit and present gifts at healthcare facilities, centers which rear and care for HIV patients.

At the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Deputy Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan and leaders from the Ministry of Health and the city’s Department of the Health visited health workers and presented 120 gifts to HIV patients who are being treated at the hospital. This is one of three largest centers of the country responsible for treatment for HIV/AIDS patients and HIV/AIDS search as well as examine, follow-up, and grant preventive treatment medicines for staff that are occupational hazards leading to HIV exposure.

On the same day, leaders from the City’s Health Department also visited and presented gifts to HIV patients at Pham Ngoc Thach Tuberculosis Hospital, Nhan Ai Hospital and Mai Hoa Center in Cu Chi district and Linh Xuan center in Thu Duc District. The delegation presented 550 gifts to HIV patients and 7 million VND to each health facility for their staff.

* On the same day, a meeting to respond to the National Action Month on HIV/AIDS prevention and control a youth festival day on HIV/AIDS prevention and control in 2010 was organized in Bac Kan province with participation of over 2,000 youth and crowds of people in Bac Kan town.

 

Bac Kan province is one of 10 provinces which have the highest rate of HIV infection in the country. However, the number of people accessing antiretroviral (ARV) medicines is few because people with HIV there are not self-aware, complex, and don’t come to any health center to be helped. Moreover, information about these centers is not known by many people.

The first HIV/AIDS case was diagnosed in 1997, Bac Kan province diagnosed 1,819 HIV infections by October 20, 2010, 668 of them were full blown AIDS and 447 died. The disease has appeared in all of the 8 districts and towns of the province.

* Hoi An city, Quang Nam province organized a meeting and parade in 8 places to respond to activities combating HIV/AIDS in 2010 on November 28.

The city focused communications on radio broadcasts, delivering leaflets, training HIV/AIDS prevention for speakers and consulting clubs and people with high risk to be infected with HIV.

So far, Quang Nam province diagnosed 630 HIV infections, almost one half of them are full blown AIDS.

* More than 1,500 youth who are staff and students in Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province, attended a meeting to launch the national action month on HIV/AIDS prevention in 2010.

According to the province’s health department, by the end of July, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS was 4,700, an increase of almost 1,200 over 2007. They are mainly young people who are at working ages, which largely affect the socio-economic development of the province.

* A meeting and parade was organized in all 85 communes and wards in Can Tho city with the participation of over 34,000 police, army, students, HIV carriers and families of HIV carriers.

The organizing board called upon the community to join hands to prevent spread of the disease and each person is equipped with necessary knowledge to protect themselves, protect their relatives and community from transmission and help people with HIV to live healthily and usefully. Can Tho city so far diagnosed more than 4,000 people living with HIV, 52% of them aged 20-29.

* The management board of the HIV/AIDS prevention project in Tuyen Quang province in cooperation with the provincial trade union organized a meeting to respond to the national action month on HIV/AIDS 2010.

Tuyen Quang province diagnosed their first HIV/AIDS-infected case in July, 1997. The province so far has detected 1,460 HIV/AIDS carriers in all districts and city.

To reduce bad effects of HIV on the community, Tuyen Quang province has established 3 clubs for HIV carriers, which have 50 members.

* On November 28 and 29, Ninh Binh province organized meetings and parades in districts, town and city. By October 20, Ninh Binh had diagnosed almost 2,500 HIV/AIDS carriers and over 500 died of AIDS. However, according to experts, the real number is three times higher than the report.

 

Ninh Binh province has established two clubs “For the bright future” for people living with HIV to share experiences, study knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention and control and join social activities for the community.

* Nam Dinh also carried out various activities to respond the national action month on HIV/AIDS prevention 2010 such as seminars to share experiences in HIV/AIDS prevention in Xuan Truong and Giao Thuy districts; disseminating the model “all people participate in HIV/AIDS prevention among the community”.
