The figure was announced during a meeting held on August 15th to review the national target program on sustainable poverty reduction in the 2011-2015 period.

According to the provincial People’s Committee, a majority of poor families gained access to the capital and had greater opportunities to enjoy production and social services to increase their income and improve their living standards.

The provincial Bank for Social Policies earmarked VND2.673 trillion as loans for assisting the production of over 38,000 poor families and those living near the poverty line;  for boosting labor export; for sharing educational fees and for improving housing quality.

The capital also contributed to giving vocational training to over 2,500 poor laborers in rural areas, buying medical insurance cards for nearly 1.2 million poor people, and providing housing support for over 16,200 poor families.

The efforts helped reduce the poverty rate from 23.92% in 2011 to 9.22% in late 2015, in which the poverty rate in mountainous districts was reduced by 6.42% per year on average, realising the targets set in the province’s 18th Party Congress Resolution.

During the meeting, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Truong Tho praised poverty reduction results, saying that they had made remarkable contribution to raising residents’ living standards, especially the living standards of people in mountainous regions.

He asked localities to raise high their sense of responsibility in effectively carrying out employment and social welfare policies, so that poor people had greater opportunities for rapid and sustainable poverty reduction, while mobilising all resources to participate in poverty reduction./.
