Accordingly, poor families in rural and ethnic minority-inhabited regions that do not have safe water to use will be connected with the water system, while those who live far from residential areas will be assisted with water containers or benefit from wells.

According to Kien Banh, Vice Head of the provincial Ethnic Minorities Board, there are 328,000 Khmer people in the province, presenting 31.5% of the province’s population.

He added that over the past years, Party organizations and authorities have made great efforts in realizing policies and programs supporting Khmer people. As a result, their material and spiritual lives have been improved.

In 2016, Tra Vinh province spent over VND7 billion giving water support to nearly 5,400 poor families in Tra Cu, Tieu Can and Cau Ke districts, including nearly 3,800 Khmer families. In particular, 1,475 families were connected with the water system with installed devices, 3,793 families were given water containers, and 117 families were supported with wells.

The efforts have helped 87% of rural residents gain access to hygienic water./.
