Tra Vinh province: Nearly VND2.5 trillion spent for Khmer ethnic minority people

In realization of the central level policies for ethnic minority people, the southern province of Tra Vinh has disbursed nearly VND2.5 trillion to strengthen ethnic minority people’s material and spiritual lives, the provincial Board of Ethnic Minorities has reported.

Accordingly, since 2006, the province has invested over VND236 billion to build and repair 363 infrastructure works; supported over 7,200 Khmer ethnic minority families to expand production; provided land for 2,010 poor Khmer ethnic minority families, and given loans worth over VND101 billion to help 447 families redeem production and 3,348 families get jobs.

From 2009 to 2015, some 20,000 Khmer families benefited from a power supply project worth over VND491 billion, while 13,000 others were supported with safe water.

In the 2009-2012 period, the province has built some 15,000 houses for disadvantaged families, using hundreds of billions of VND, and disbursed nearly VND20 billion as loans for over 4,000 families to expand production.

Furthermore, Khmer people in the province has also benefited from diverse policies in healthcare, agricultural production training, publications and the building of a crematorium.

According to Kien Ninh, Head of the provincial Board of Ethnic Minorities, the province has a population of over one million, 31.5% of whom are Khmer ethnic minority people. Thanks to the implementation of Party and State policies, the infrastructure in remote and extremely disadvantaged regions has been completed, and thousands of poor Khmer families have been provided with land and production support. As a result, the poverty rate was reduced from 23.63% in 2011 to 7.61% in 2016; in Khmer inhabited regions alone, the rate was reduced by 4% per year on average./.
