There are 7.6 million disabled people in Vietnam, accounting for 7.8% of the population at the age of 5 or more, 28.9% of whom are seriously disabled or extremely seriously disabled persons. Due to the influence of aging population, environmental pollution, climate change, traffic and work accidents, the number of disabled persons is forecast to rise in the years to come.

Addressing the meeting, VNFFD President Dang Huynh Mai confirmed that the Party and State had issued a large number of legal documents facilitating favourable conditions for organizations and individuals to assist disabled persons in realizing their civil rights and responsibilities.

“Diverse activities by sponsors and organizations have helped disabled persons have access to education, healthcare, vocational training and jobs,” said Ms Mai, adding that therefore, many disabled persons had developed independent lives and assist other disabled persons in integrating communities.

Presentations at the meeting reported the fact that disabled persons faced a lot of difficulties in life, including poor living standard, inadequate access to State preferential policies and discrimination. “Greater assistance and more preferential policies are needed to support disabled persons integrating more deeply society,” delegates agreed./.
