Vietnam records first COVID-19 death with end-stage renal failure

The first death from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been recorded in Vietnam since the outbreak of the respiratory illness hit the nation in January, adding to fears about the spread of the virus as the number of locally-transmitted infections keep rising in the community over the past few days.

According to the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention, the first death is a 70 year- old male patient of Da Nang Internal Medicine – Endocrinology Hospital. He lives in Hoi An city of the central province of Quang Nam.

The patient was taken to the Renal-Urology Department of Da Nang Hospital on July 9 with a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease and underwent hemodialysis. He had underlying health conditions with a history of blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and pneumonia. The patient was sampled and tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on July 27th.

The patient died after a heart attack and he had underwent many underlying health issues such as blood pressure, myocardial ischemia, end-stage renal failure and pneumonia caused by COVID-19," Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of Department of Medical Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health.In five other provinces and cities across the country recorded 13 more coronavirus cases, including  7 in Quang Nam, 1 in Quang Ngai 1, 2 in Ho Chi Minh City , 2 in Hanoi, 1 in Dak Lak 1. All of these cases have epidemiological factors related to Da Nang outbreak.

As of 10 am on July 31st, Vietnam recorded a total of 509 cases of COVID-19, including one fatality. It is worth noting that the central city of Da Nang a current major outbreak in the country confirmed 80 cases, including 8 medical workers, 44 patients, 26 patients' families and 2 locally-transmitted infections./.
