Since 2014, Vietnam has made important progress in controlling avian flu in animals; successfully prevented the penetration of A/H7N9 flu viruses into Vietnam; not detected any avian flu patients; and exported poultry products to foreign markets.

So said Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Health Dam Xuan Thanh during a meeting held on October 16th on the national plan for avian flu prevention in 2014 - 2018 and 2019 - 2025.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan said that since 2003, dozens of countries around the world have reported avian flu, forcing them to destroy millions of poultry each year. Up to 860 people in 16 countries have been infected with A/H5N1 flu viruses, including 454 fatalities. Additionally, since 2013, 1,625 people have been infected with flu A/H7N9 viruses, claiming the lives of 623 people, mainly in China.

First reported in Vietnam in late 2003, the disease made Vietnam one of the countries bearing the largest loss, with over 45 million poultry culled between 2003 and 2006. Meanwhile, from 2004 to 2014, Vietnam recognized 127 human infections of A/H5N1 flu, with 64 deaths.

Synchronous measures have been carried out to prevent the disease in Vietnam, helping minimize the risk of avian flu infections both in poultry and in humans, as well as minimize the number of avian flu fatalities. Since 2014, Vietnam has not reported any avian flu cases in humans, while the breeding industry has been restored and steadily grown, reaching over 330 million poultry. The environmental pollution caused by the destruction of avian flu infected poultry has also been reduced.

“Vietnam has successfully controlled avian flu,” the Deputy Minister confirmed./.
