VRC brings humanitarian value to communities

Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) has become a familiar image to all classes of people as it carries out humanitarian activities and provides material and spiritual assistance for disadvantaged people, contributing to accelerating poverty reduction and mitigating climate change consequences.

So said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam during a meeting held on November 22nd to mark 60th year of the VRC joining of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (November 4th), and the 71st anniversary of the VRC.

He said he hoped the VRC would continue to closely work with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as well as international humanitarian organizations, for a peaceful world without war and poverty, and for the happiness of everyone.

“Over 71 years, the VRC has actively coordinated humanitarian activities, assist more and more poor and vulnerable people in society,” he stressed.

According to VRC President Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, in the 2012-2017 period, the organization carried out diverse humanitarian programs. Notably, hundreds of billions of VND was spent each year giving Tet presents to disadvantaged people; cows worth some VND310 billion were provided for 21,600 disadvantaged families; and free medical treatment and medicine were allocated to some 1.4 million people.

It has helped 585 communities develop quick responses for natural disasters and calamities; and used over VND460 billion to assist 1.8 million people affected by natural disasters and calamities, and millions of people to donate blood, raising the value of activities over the past 5 years to over VND9.5 trillion.

Since its official membership of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the organization has actively joined countries’ activities in assisting people affected by calamities, natural disasters and conflicts, showing its solidarity with international friends.

Over the past five years, the relationship between the VRC and partners belonging to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has been expanded, thus coordinating with Vietnam in carrying out humanitarian projects and sharing experience in humanitarian activities.

As a result, the VRC has received 20 projects per year sponsored by international partners with capital of over VND510 billion, focusing on preventing and responding to calamities and rescue work; reducing risks and tackling climate change./.
