(CPV) - Vietnamese “Cetus” Nguyen Thi Anh Vien on August 21st won a gold medal in the women’s 100m backstroke event at the ongoing SEA Games 2017 in Malaysia.

The 100m backstroke is not the strength of Vietnamese swimmer in SEA Games.

She clocked 1:01:89, breaking the previous SEA Games record of 1:02:11 set by legendary Singapore’s Tao Li. This is the first time the 21 years old solider triumphed in this category at the region’s largest sports event. Legendary Tao Li dominated the category for long in the last six Games. She defeated Anh Vien rival in both SEA Games 2011 and 2013. In the 2015’s sporting festival, the Can Tho city-origin athlete even did not compete in the event as Tao Li was still there.

Minutes earlier, she failed to get a positive result in the women’s 200m butterfly category, which is her strength.

Anh Vien has set a target to pocket ten golds at SEA Games 2017, surpassing the eight gold medals achieved two years ago in Singapore.

The same day, her teammate Le Thi My Thao from Binh Phuoc province (21) secured a silver medal in the women’s 200m butterfly category with a time of 2:12:61.

Meanwhile, both Vietnamese - American Paul Le Nguyen (25) and Nguyen Huu Kim Son (15) finished third in the men’s 50m backstroke and 400m free-style events respectively, bringing home two bronze medals.

The 25-player Vietnam’s national swimming team will compete in all 38 categories, aiming to win one-sixth of Vietnam’s total target of 60 gold medals./.
