“Returning to Truong Son” cycling race to begin on July 15th

(CPV) - The 3rd “Returning to Truong Son” cycling race (People’s Army Newspaper Cup), will be held from July 15th-20th, 2017, as part of activities paying gratitude and honouring national contributors.

This year’s event draws the participation of the 12 strongest men’s teams nationwide and two junior teams from Laos and Thailand.

Mr Nguyen Duc Cuong, head of Cycling Department under the General Department Sports and Physical Training, said that all members of the national squad should apply their best skills but be careful as the 29th SEA Games is coming very soon.

During the six days, the organizing board (People’s Army Newspaper, General Department of Sports and Physical Training, and Vietnam Military-run Telecommunications Group Viettel) will host activities such as visiting martyrs’ cemeteries, presenting 15 gratitude houses, 20 tonnes of rice, 300 gifts for revolutionary families, over 300 scholarships for disadvantaged local students, and a healthcare station for Cam Van commune, Cam Thuy district in Thanh Hoa province, with a total capital of nearly VND7 billion.

According to Major-General Pham Van Huan, Editor-in-Chief of People’s Army Newspaper, as the nation celebrates the 70th anniversary of War Invalids' and Martyrs' Day (July 27th), this tour will inspire cycling nationwide, improving professional skills for cyclists.

The first round will begin around Hoan Kiem lake on July 15th (30 laps, 51km), followed by the routes of Hanoi - Thanh Hoa (July 16th, 157km), Thanh Hoa - Ha Tinh (July 17th, 189km), Ha Tinh - Quang Binh (July 18th, 150km), Quang Binh - Truong Son Martyrs' Cemetery (July 19th, 120km), and 24 laps around Quang Tri ancient citadel (July 20th, 52.8km).

The total prize offered is over VND300 million.

The opening ceremony, the first round, the closing ceremony, and the laps around Quang Tri ancient citadel, will be broadcast live on VTV6./.
