(CPV) - Despite seeing a lot of challenges, the Vietnamese national sports delegation hopes to finish its “double target”, Top 3 and Top for Olympic/ASIAD participating athletes.

The first ever SEA Games 2003 set a milestone for Vietnam as it ranked first in delegation.

Later on, the nation placed top 3 in the 2011 and 2015 festivals.

Cetus Anh Vien

One of the problems for Vietnam is the subjects and categories, even belonging to the Olympic system. Especially, “Cetus” Anh Vien bagged 8 golds in 28th SEA Games, thus placing Vietnam on the world map.

According to Mr Tran Duc Phan, Vice Head of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, cum Head of the Vietnamese sports delegation, some favoured names like wrestling, rowing, canoeing, women’s weight lifting, women’s boxing or group fencing are absent in this year’s event. Obviously, Vietnam is likely to come up short by at least 20 golds compared with the previous time.

The nation aims win around 49 - 59 golds, mainly in athletics, swimming, shooting, Taekwondo, fencing, Wushu Taolu, pencak silat, and men’s and women’s football. Meanwhile, the Top 3 requires from 65 - 70 golds. While Malaysia and Thailand are the two candidates for the two best, Vietnam and Indonesia should be in play for third position.

We have big names like Anh Vien (swimming) or Xuan Vinh (shooting) who compete in both SEA Games and Olympic/ASIAD./.
