Hoang Xuan Vinh wins Vietnam's first-ever Olympic gold

With 202.5 points through 20 turns of shooting, the 42-year-old veteran Hoang Xuan Vinh won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for Vietnam after claiming the men's 10m air pistol title in the 2016 Rio Games on August 6th (Brazilian time).

His total overall score also set a new Olympic record due to a new scoring system being adopted following the 2012 London Olympic and was just 0.4 points higher than his nearest competitor of the Brazilian group Felipe We.

Pang Wei of the Chinese group won the third title while the champion of the content of the previous Olympic, Jin Jong-oh of the Republic of Korea only ranked the fifth.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, Vietnamese delegation attended with a record number of 23 competitors and will compete in 10 sports.

Vietnam has won two Olympic silvers prior to the 2016 Games, one for weightlifting athlete Hoang Anh Tuan at the 2008 Beijing Olympic and the other for Taekwondo athlete Tran Hieu Ngan at the 2000 Sydney Olympic./.
