Le Van Cong, Nguyen Binh An “deeply broke” ASEAN Para Games

(CPV)- Two Vietnamese weightlifters Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An have set new records on September 18th for their men’s 49kg and 54kg categories at the ongoing ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In the men’s 49kg, there is no rival for Paralympic champion Le Van Cong, as he surpassed the second competitor from Laos by 50kg in the very first move. The gold medal surely belongs to Van Cong with a total weight of 175kg, and, the 33-year-old Vietnamese athlete successfully broke ASEAN Para Games record (178kg) with 179kg. Last but not least, in his last feat, the Central Ha Tinh province-origin lifted a total 181kg, getting non-stop applauds from audiences.

His team-mate, Nguyen Binh An, also bagged a gold in the men’s 54kg event, with weights of 175kg, 178kg and 181kg set. While the current ASEAN Para Games record is 175kg. He was followed by Amorntep Pongsa from Thailand.

“I was so happy after five times pocketing golds as well as breaking five ASEAN Para Games. It came from my hard training and special nutritious menu”, said Le Van Cong happily.

Meanwhile, Vi Thi Hang (27) from Central Highlands Dak Nong province, who had experienced three ASEAN Para Games (S7-classified Paralympic swimmer) is the first athlete gaining gold for the nation in the women’s 100m free-style, clocking at 1’23”99. Furthermore, in the men’s 100m free-style, Vo Huynh Anh Khoa (S9-classified Paralympic swimmer) also pocketed his gold with 1’02”19.

In competition day September 18th, the Vietnamese sports delegation bagged eight golds (four in swimming, two in weight-lifting, and two in athletics), nine silvers, and six bronzes, temporarily placing 4th position.  

This year, Vietnam sent a 192-member delegation to Malaysia, with 142 athletes competing for eight events, including athletics, swimming, weight-lifting, badminton, table tennis, chess,  boccia (a precision ball sport, similar to bocce, and related to bowls and pétanque), and blind football./.

The ASEAN Para Games 2017 or the 9th ASEAN Para Games is a Southeast Asian disabled multi-sport event that will take place in Kuala Lumpur from September 17th to 23rd with 368 events in 16 sports.
