A new skill of Vietnamese gymnast Pham Phuoc Hung was recognised by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) at the 47th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2017 in Montreal, Canada.

Hung successfully performed his new skill in the still rings event, at a difficultly level of value of E, with I being the hardest. The skill was officially named “The Pham”, coming from his family name.

This is the second time that the gymnast has invented a new skill in the event. Earlier at the world championships held in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2015, he successfully performed a skill of D value.

Another Vietnamese gymnast, Nguyen Tuan Dat, was recognised by the FIG at the world championships in 2013 for his skill.

According to the FIG, if a gymnast who has submitted a skill to be named after them completes the new element without a major deduction in World or Olympic competition, or at another registered FIG competition where a Men’s Technical Committee member participates, the element will bear the name of that gymnast in the men's Code of Points.

The new skills were submitted by federations and evaluated prior to the start of the World Championships by the FIG Men's Technical Committee./.
