(CPV) - Vietnam took a big step towards qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup after trouncing a visiting Cambodia 5-0 in a Group C clash at the Hanoi’s My Dinh national stadium on October 10th.

Players kept their promise by turning their latest qualifying match into a farewell for their interim head coach Mai Duc Chung.

Vietnamese fans stood up to cheer the home team in the 13th, the 56th, the 60th, the 76th and the 90th minutes of the game.

Cambodia’s head coach Leonardo Vitorino said at the pre-match briefing that Vietnam was a stronger but he hoped his players might create a minor shock, after their 1-2 loss in the first leg match last month in Phnom Penh capital. However, they suffered an even greater defeat.

The half-time break was not enough time for Vitorino to turn around his team’s fortunes, and Vietnam’s captain Nguyen Van Quyet made the score 2-0 for the hosts around 10 minutes after the interval.

The 2015 Golden Ball winner Nguyen Anh Duc, who returned to the national team after several years of absence, marked his name with a goal in the 60th minute.

Nguyen Cong Phuong finally scored his first goal for the national team in the 76th minute, when the young striker left behind two Cambodian players before shooting into the net.

Mac Hong Quan, 25, an OV footballer who plays in the attacking position for Than Quang Ninh club in the V-League, closed the door for Cambodian rivals with a goal by his head in the 90th minute + 2.
