The Tuy Hoa airport in the southern province Phu Yen will have its first international air route, operated by Russia’s Ural Airlines, in December 2018, helping the locality welcome more Russians and Chineses, reported the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The route is planned to have four flights a week. Aircrafts will depart from Russia, with a stop in China before landing in Phu Yen.

The provincial tourism sector expected the new route will not only help Phu Yen make new progress for international tourist growth, but also contribute to boosting investment in the non-smoke industry.

Currently, Phu Yen has two 5-star hotels, two 4-star hotels, three 3-star hotels and lower standard hotels. In the short term, the 3 to 5-star hotels are capable of serving foreign tourists of the new air route. By the first quarter of 2019, the locality will have an additional 300 rooms at 5-star standard put into use. Some other projects are speeding up construction progress.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Tuy Hoa airport has a designed capacity of 600,000 passengers a year, receiving domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. Last year, it greeted about 2,258 flights with 337,000 passengers, up 6.8% against 2016.

Under the plan approved by the Government leader, the airport will be upgraded and have a new terminal to meet the designed capacity of 3 million passengers a year in the 2020-2030 period. Some Russian airlines are surveying the possibility of opening direct international routes to Tuy Hoa city due to the overloading of the Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa province./.
