This is an important award of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, which is annually granted to organizations, businesses and individuals with contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development.

This is the first time the award given to the twinning field of German cities with their foreign partners on a global scale.

Hoi An and Wernigerode were the first two cities receiving the significant award. Each city is also donated EUR30,000 to use in local projects in sustainable urban development. The Ministry’s Engagement Global organization will manage the use of this money.

Recently, Wernigerod has called on the German government to fund the solar power system in Hoi An with nearly EUR170,000 and the government also sponsored EUR178,000 to develop cycle transport in the city.

In addition, there are many people-to-people exchanges being organized between the two cities, showing the close association between Hoi An and Wernigerode in particular, and Germany with small localities globally in general./.
