International workshop on legal status of islands and rocks in international law in South China Sea opens

(CPV) - Pham Van Dong University and Nha Trang University co-organise an International Workshop titled “Legal status of islands and rocks in international law and practice in the East Sea” on August 17th-18th 2016 at InterContinental Hotel in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province, Viet Nam.

This event follows the successful international workshops on “The sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly archipelagos: Historical and Legal Aspects” held on April 27th-28th 2013 in Quang Ngai City and “Paracel - Spratly Archipelagos: Historical Truth” held on June 19th-21st 2014 in Da Nang City.

There will be around 100 participants including international and Vietnamese scholars, researchers, who are experts on the international law of the sea and particularly interested in the current situation in the South China Sea, namely Prof. Carl Thayer, Prof. Erik Franckx, Prof. Koichi Sato, Dr. Timo Kivimaki, Dr. Amy Searight Ambassador Nguyen Quy Binh, Dr. Tran Cong Truc, etc.

The workshop will focus on the following topics: Legal status of islands and rocks in international law; Sovereignty dispute over the Paracel and Spratly islands; The Arbitration Award on the South China Sea case between the Philippines and China.

In addition to the workshop, the organisers will cooperate with the Institute of Oceanography to present an exhibition titled “Historical Evidences of Viet Nam sovereignty over Spratly and Paracel archipelagos” at the main hall of the hotel during the workshop and at the Museum of Oceanography. Especially, participants will enjoy a trip to Cam Ranh Naval Base in the morning of August 18th./.
