Heavy rainfall is thought to be a possible cause of the accident, according to the provincial government’s Land and Resources Department.

The government has sent some 3,000 rescuers, along with heavy digging equipment, and has promised to do all it can to look for survivors.

President Xi Jingping said, “Authorities must make maximum efforts to reduce casualties and prevent secondary disasters” while calling for "all-out efforts" to save those who were buried.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in offering his condolences, said in a statement that the UN is prepared to offer any needed support./.
