15th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council Meeting opens in Laos

The 15th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council (ASCC) Meeting has taken place in Luang Prabang province, Laos.

The Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Labour, War- Invalids and Social Affairs Doan Mau Diep attended the event.

The event was also attended by Ministers and Heads of Cultural issues of 10 ASEAN member countries and Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh.

At the event, the participants focused on priorities of the ASCC in the Laos ASEAN chairmanship, the implementation of the ASCC Master Plan to 2025 and relevant issues. 

In his opening speech, Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his hope that officials attending the meeting will continue working to effectively support and supervise the implementation of the ASCC Master Plan 2016-2025, thus contributing to realising the ASEAN Vision 2025. A joint statement on issues discussed is scheduled to be released after the meeting.

The ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community aims to contribute to realising an ASEAN Community that is people-oriented and socially responsible, with a view to achieving enduring solidarity and unity among the peoples and Member States of ASEAN. It seeks to forge a common identity and build a caring and sharing society which is inclusive and where the well-being, livelihood, and welfare of the peoples are enhanced.

Laos became a member of ASEAN in 1997 and first chaired the regional bloc in 2004, hosting the 10th ASEAN Summit and its related meetings.

ASEAN was established in 1967, and includes Laos, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam./.
