50th founding anniversary of ASEAN marked in South Africa

On August 8th, the ASEAN Pretoria Committee (APC) celebrated the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) (8/8/1967 - 8/8/2017) in the capital city Pretoria in South Africa.

The event was co-organised by seven Embassies of ASEAN in South Africa including Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Addressing the event, Indonesian Ambassador Suprapto Martosetomo, APC Chairman, reviewed the establishment and development of ASEAN over the past five decades.

The establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015 marked an important milestone in regional economic and trade connectivity, as well as illustrating the commitment to building a single market of over 630 million people to increase competitiveness and promote intra- and extra-bloc cooperation, he said.

Earlier, Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Vu Van Dung handed over the post of Chairman of the APC to the Indonesia Ambassador Suprapto Martosetomo./.
