6.0-magnititude earthquake shakes Peru

A strong and deep earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale hit a rural area in northern Peru on April 18th.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the tremor occurred in a sparsely populated area 263 kilometers northeast of Iquitos city.

Officials said residents of towns in Peru and neighbouring Ecuador evacuated buildings and took precautionary measures, but emergency services reported no damage.

The earthquake comes days after Ecuador commemorated the first anniversary of an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale that left nearly 700 dead./.
