6.8- magnitude earthquake strikes near Solomon islands

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale has struck west of the Solomon islands.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake hit the area at a depth of 30km.

The earthquake‘s epicentre was located some 67 kilometers from the town of Kirakira, the capital of Makira-Ulawa province in the Solomon Islands. The quake was initially measured at 6.8 on the Richter scale, but later revised to 6.5.

There were no initial reports of damage and no tsunami threat./.
