Mugabe previously said he wants to rule until he dies, although he said he is open to retirement if asked by his party.

“Of course if I feel that I can’t do it anymore, I will say so to my party so that they relieve me. But for now I think I can’t say so,” Mugabe said.

In 2018 his country will go to the polls, and he is the ruling ZANU-PF party's sole presidential candidate. If he wins, it will be Mugabe's last term as president of Zimbabwe.

President Mugabe has been president since 1980, this was when Zimbabwe gained its independence from Britain. He is Africa's oldest serving President, and third on the list of the continent's longest serving presidents./.
