Angela Merkel, born in 1954, is best known as the first female chancellor of Germany and one of the architects of the European Union.

Merkel’s hopes of securing a fourth term as chancellor in September rely on CDU remaining the largest party. The chancellor is usually selected from the most popular party after a parliamentary vote.

CDU and CSU are two of the three ruling parties of Germany, along with the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

As for the SPD, it chose Mr. Martin Schulz, former President of European Parliament, as the Chancellor candidate./.
