Angela Merkel wins re-election as Chair of CDU Party

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has won re-election as chairwoman of her Christian Democrats (CDU) with 89.5 percent of votes cast.

"I accept the election outcome and am pleased with the result. Thank you for the trust," Merkel said after the vote.

Angela Merkel, born in 1954, is the current Chancellor of Germany. In 2007, Merkel was President of the European Council and chaired the G8, the second woman to do so. Merkel played a central role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Lisbon and the Berlin Declaration.

Merkel has twice been named the world's second most powerful person by Forbes magazine, the highest ranking ever achieved by a woman.

In December 2015, Merkel was named Time magazine's Person of the Year, with the magazine's cover declaring her to be the "Chancellor of the Free World”. On March, 26th 2014, Merkel became the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the European Union and she is currently the senior G7 leader. In May 2016, Merkel was named the most powerful woman in the world for a record tenth time by Forbes.

She had declared in November that she was ready to run for the fourth term in office in the 2017 election./.
