ASEAN intensifies campaign against Zika virus

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) health leaders are intensifying the campaign on Zika virus.

The Philippine Ministry of Health has confirmed three new cases of Zika virus, bringing the number of locally-transmitted Zika virus cases to 12 this year, including a pregnant woman.

According to the latest tally, there are now 369 cases of Zika in Singapore, There are six cases in Malaysia. The virus is spread by the Aedes mosquitoes as they bite anyone carrying the virus from abroad or anyone from the vicinity.

The Zika virus is confirmed to cause the severe birth defect microcephaly, and it’s estimated that millions of people are infected in the Americas. In the continental US, there are over 1,000 people infected due to travel, including 320 pregnant women.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency because of the risk to newborn children.

70 countries and territories around the world have reported Zika cases.

There is no vaccine against the Zika virus./.
