Colombian Vice President German Vargas Lleras to run for President

Colombian Vice President German Vargas Lleras plans to step down March 15th to run in the 2018 presidential election.

Vargas Lleras is considered one of the strong contenders in the upcoming campaign.

German Vargas Lleras, born in 1962, is a Colombian lawyer and politician. He served in the Administration of President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon from 2010 to 2013 as the 2nd Minister of Housing, City and Territory, as the 9th Minister of the Interior, and as the 5th Minister of the Interior and Justice.

From 1994 to 2008, he served as Senator of Colombia having been elected for four consecutive terms.

Earlier, President Juan Manuel Santos appointed former Director of National Police, Chief Oscar Naranjo, 61, to replace Mr. German Vargas Lleras as Vice President.

Naranjo served as head of the National Police Force between 2007 and 2012./.
