About 5,000 homes in Chiapas were destroyed by the quake, and around 11,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in Oaxaca.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said Mexico's army, marines and federal police had been mobilized to respond.

The quake struck off the country’s southern Pacific coast, 165km west of the state of Chiapas, just before midnight on Thursday (September 7th) local time.

One of the worst hit areas was Juchitan, where swathes of the city were destroyed.

Government cargo planes have had to fly in supplies, with the army also called in to distribute boxes of food to survivors of the earthquake.

Local officials said they had counted nearly 800 aftershocks of all sizes since late Thursday’s big quake, and the US Geological Survey counted nearly 60 with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater./.
