Earthquake kills at least 20 people in Jiuzhaigou, China

A powerful earthquake hit China’s mountainous southeast, killing at least 20 people and injuring 431, on August 10th.

More than 60,000 people have been evacuated from the area amid continuing aftershocks, state media said.

Most of the deaths and injuries were recorded in Zhangzha township, near Jiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan province, listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Among the injured, 40 were listed in serious condition, according to the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture government in Sichuan. At least five of the dead were tourists, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said.

Jiuzhaigou is a popular scenic area in China noted for its natural beauty. In the summer, tourists from around the country flock to the area to take in its lush forests and colorful waterfalls. On August 8th, the scenic area welcomed more than 38,000 visitors.

The quake hit at a depth of 10km in a sparsely populated area 200km Northwest of the city of Guangyuan, the US Geological Survey said./.
