At an elaborate ceremony at the Elysee Palace in Paris, he said his presidency would "give the French back the confidence to believe in themselves".

He also vowed to see the EU "reformed and relaunched" during his time in office.

Independent centrist Macron defeated Marine Le Pen by 66.06% to 33.94% to win the Presidency.

Mr Macron, 39, the youngest President in France’s history, is also the first president from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic's foundation in 1958.

Macron met for an hour with his predecessor, Socialist Francois Hollande, prior to being sworn in. The pair met in the president’s office to discuss issues of national security, including the country’s nuclear codes./.
