The incident took place at Mushtaq Nagar in the industrial city of Ludhiana, some 100 km from the Punjab capital of Chandigarh.

“We have managed to pull out one body. The person’s identify is not known,” said Ludhiana senior police officer Jitender Singh, who is near the factory coordinating rescue efforts.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said he was “shocked and saddened” by the incident, and had asked the Ludhiana district administration to “extend all help” to the National Disaster Response Force in rescue operations.

A blast was heard shortly before the building collapsed around noon, trapping those trying to douse the blaze, besides others. Six bodies were retrieved from the rubble, while two injured were shifted to Christian Medical College and Hospital./.
