Cambodia, Laos agree to speed up talks over border issues

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Lao counterpart, Thongloun Sisoulith, on Sept. 1st agreed to speed up negotiations and complete settlement of border issues between the countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference following a closed-door meeting between the two leaders at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, PM Hun Sen said that the Cambodian and Lao foreign ministers will meet in Phnom Penh in the next few days to discuss and seek concrete solutions to the remaining border issues.
He added that both sides agreed to send their respective experts in the Cambodia-Laos Joint Border Committee to work together at disputed border areas and to immediately demarcate any areas where the two sides agree.

The two PMs will send a letter to the French President, asking for the re-production of a Cambodia-Laos border map drawn previously by France from the scale of 1/100,000 to 1/50,000 and provision of documents related to the shared borderline, PM Hun Sen added.
PM Sisoulith said he agreed with the points PM Hun Sen had mentioned, and affirmed that the settlement of border issues between the two countries is based on the principles of friendship and equality and through peaceful measures.
At their meeting on August 12th in Vientiane, the two leaders agreed to withdraw troops from border areas between the Lao province of Attapu and the Cambodian province of Stung Treng./.
