Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, a 41-year-old comic actor who has never held public office, won 73 percent of the vote, a decisive victory over the incumbent President, Petro O. Poroshenko.
After taking the most votes in last month's first-round election, Mr. Zelensky had enjoyed a strong lead over the 53-year-old Poroshenko going into the poll on April 21st.
"To all Ukrainians, no matter where you are, I promise that I will never let you down”, Mr. Zelenskiy told jubilant supporters at his Kiev campaign headquarters where he was showered with glittering confetti after the exit polls were released.
"While I am not formally President yet, as a citizen of Ukraine I can tell all post-Soviet countries: 'Look at us! Everything is possible!'."
The star of TV series "Servant of the People" will now take the helm of a country of 45 million people beset by challenges.
The new President will be elected for a five-year term.
