Senators voted 52-46 to approve Friedman's nomination.

Friedman was nominated by President Donald Trump on his first day in office. He was also one of Trump's top advisers on the U.S.-Israel relationship during the Republican's campaign.

“I intend to work tirelessly to strengthen the unbreakable bond between our two countries and advance the cause of peace within the region, and look forward to doing this from the US embassy in Israel’s eternal capital, Jerusalem,” Mr Friedman said in a statement following his nomination in December.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Twitter that Friedman "will be warmly welcomed as President Trump's representative and as a close friend of Israel"./.
