Former Togolese Prime Minister elected as IFAD's President

Mr. Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, former Togolese Prime Minister, was elected as the 6th President of the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Houngbo is expected to assume office on April 1st after the second term of the incumbent President of IFAD Kanayo Nwanze ends, IFAD's website added.

Mr. Honungbo's election comes at a time when many developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya included, are experiencing food shortage due to the effects of climate change.

Speaking after the election, Mr Houngbo pledged to ensure that more agricultural projects are funded across the world to eradicate poverty.

Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, born in 1961, was Prime Minister of Togo from September 2008 to July 2012. Previously he worked at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Since 2013, Houngbo has been Deputy Director-General for Field Operations and Partnership at the International Labour Office./.
