French Premier resigns and declares Presidential bid

France’s Premier Manuel Vall has announced that he is stepping down from his post to run for president next year.

Premier Manuel Valls, who was born in Barcelona, Spain, and became a French citizen at 20, said he wanted to “give everything for France, which has given me so much.” He pledged to overhaul the French economy while “making globalization work for the people.”

In a speech announcing his candidacy and his resignation from the post of prime minister, Valls laid out the main pillars of the campaign he will be running ahead of the primary’s first round on January 22nd.

The first round of the French presidential election is due to be held on April 23rd, with a decisive run-off on May 7th.

Manuel Valls, born in 1962, was the Premier of France from March 31st, 2014 until December 6th, 2016. He was the Minister of the Interior from 2012 to 2014. He is a member of the Socialist Party.

Born in Barcelona to a Spanish father and a Swiss mother, Valls was Mayor of Evry from 2001 to 2012 and was first elected to the National Assembly of France in 2002. He is regarded as belonging to the Socialist Party's social liberal wing, sharing common orientations with Scandinavian-style social democracy and Blairism./.
