The delay was to allow for checks to be made on the "tax status" of potential ministers and any possible conflicts of interest, the president's office said in a statement.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Mr. Edouard Philippe, a 47-year-old French politician and lawyer, as Prime Minister.

This is the first time in recent history that a French President has appointed a Prime Minister outside his own party.

On May 7th, independent centrist Macron defeated Marine Le Pen by 66.06% to 33.94% to win the Presidency.

Mr Macron, at 39 the youngest President in France’s history, was sworn in on May 15th.

At the elaborate swearing-in ceremony at the Elysee Palace in Paris, he said his presidency would "give the French back the confidence to believe in themselves".

He also vowed to see the EU "reformed and relaunched" during his time in office./.
