Indian Presidential election begins

The 14th Indian Presidential election began in the Indian capital, New Delhi on July 17th.

Former Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind and former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar will face off in the election to pick the President.

The voting took place between 10am and 5pm. Paper ballots will be used in the presidential election and the votes will be valid only if the special violet ink pen is used to vote.

A total of 4,896 voters, including 776 members of Parliaments and 4,120 state assembly members are eligible to cast their ballot.

The winner of the election will be sworn into office for a five-year term on July 27th and will replace incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee, a political veteran who has held the post since 2012.

India will also choose a new Vice President, voting for which is scheduled for August 5th. 

The tenure of incumbent Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th president of India will end on July 24th./.
