The visit is made at the invitation of Cuban president Raul Castro, brother of long-time leader Fidel who died aged 90 last November.

As part of his official visit to the country, the Irish President is scheduled to pay tribute to National Hero Jose Marti at the memorial erected in his honour, and hold official conversations with Army General Raul Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba.

President Higgins is the first Irish head of state to visit Cuba while in office.

A spokesperson for President Higgins said the visit is an opportunity for Ireland and Cuba to set a course for a deeper and more focused relationship.

It is also seen by the Cuban government as a route to deeper relations with the EU./.
