The USdropped the bomb on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, killing thousands of people instantly and about 140,000 by the end of that year.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking at the annual ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park near the ground zero, said Japan hoped to push for a world without nuclear weapons in a way in which all countries can agree.

“For us to truly pursue a world without nuclear weapons, we need participation from both nuclear-weapons and non-nuclear-weapons states,” Mr. Abe said in his speech at the annual ceremony.

“Here in Hiroshima city, I renew my pledge to do my utmost to bring about a nuclear free world and eternal peace. And I also pray for the peace of the atomic bomb victims and the bereaved families, those attending here as well as the citizens of Hiroshima city,” he added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for all states to work toward a world free of nuclear weapons “in their own ways,” in a message read on his behalf by Izumi Nakamitsu, U.N. undersecretary-general and high representative for disarmament affairs.

“Hiroshima’s message of peace and the heroic efforts of the atomic bomb survivors have reminded the world of the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. The UN stands with you in our shared pursuit of a world free of nuclear weapons,” the message said./.
