Speaking at the summit, Abe said the aid is intended to promote “self-reliance” among refugees and spur economic development of host countries in what he called “the humanitarian and development nexus.”

Abe made the pledge as world leaders vowed in a political declaration to assist more than 65 million refugees and migrants who have fled conflict and disasters in the largest numbers since World War II.

At last year’s U.N. General Assembly, Abe said Japan would provide about USD1.6 billion to assist Syrians and Iraqis displaced by war and for building peace across the Middle East and Africa./.
