The King landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 11h00 to be greeted by Prime Minister Najub Razak and Cabinet ministers.

Malaysia's Foreign Minister Anifah Aman, in a media briefing on the visit, described relations between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia as strong.

"There is a close personal relationship between the two countries," he said.

Saudi Arabia is Malaysia's second largest trading partner in the Middle East, and trade between the two countries saw an increase of 19.8 per cent last year from the previous year, the Malaysian news agency Bernama reported.

Nearly 60 per cent of Malaysia's total exports to Saudi Arabia are related to palm oil and palm-based agricultural products, machinery, equipment and parts, processed food, and electrical and electronic products.

“We are now looking to further strengthen the relationship between our countries, especially in education and scientific research," Head of the Cultural Mission at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Dr Zayed Al-Harithi said in his speech at an ice-breaking event between the Malaysian media and the Saudi Arabian media.

Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia that King Salman visits since he became monarch in January 2015 following the death of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.

After Malaysia, the King is expected to travel to Jakarta and Bali in Indonesia from March 1st-9th, with an even larger entourage of 1,500 people, followed by a trip to Japan from March 12th to 14th, officials in those countries said./.
